Ferrari Sports Cars 2009

This is an enjoyable way to begin the brand discussion with a group. It generally creates good discussion, and gets participants out of their normal frames of thought. “Forced Relationship” is basically a technique of forcing yourself to think of your organization’s brand in terms of another product or industry. “If our company were an auto manufacturer, which would it be?” Since we often understand other companies’ brands better than our own, it is a means to start fresh in our thinking. I usually pick three from the list posted at the end of this article, and spend about an hour on the discussion.

This technique, in various forms, is also known as a Forced Analogy, “How is my problem like a (insert random object).” One approach in a forced analogy is to compare a problem or an organization to the various aspects of something else that is familiar to the participants. How is this similar to a shark’s teeth, a shark’s skin, a shark’s living environment, etc.

As I use the exercise, I give the group 2-3 categories drawn from the discussion guide at the bottom of this post. Usually I use at least one category (such as automobile) for which the various brands are well known by most consumers. Automobiles are generally helpful as a category because there is so much advertising done for them that most people have a pretty good idea of what the brand represents. At the very least, people have ideas about how different sorts of vehicles represent different functionality.

Subaru has built itself a reputation for safety on the back of its symmetrical all-wheel drive system, at least in North America, but with the development of a new rear-wheel drive sports car, the automaker’s image may be jeopardized.

This is an issue that has Subaru’s management worried, so much so that it is even considering excluding the upcoming rear-wheel drive sports car from sale in North America.

“We’re an all-wheel-drive brand,” company spokesman Michael McHale explained to Ward’s Auto. At question is whether brand loyalists would “forgive us a one-off exception,” he said.

McHale went on to reveal that the Subaru and Toyota versions will be very similar, except for unique styling at the front and rear.

Lotus makes a family sports car

Lotus Evora
Lotus Evora

The Lotus Evora is the first all-new Lotus since the Elise roadster of 1996 (the coupe version called Exige joined the line-up in 2000) and the world's only production mid-engine 2+2.

"Evora is the biggest milestone Lotus has achieved since the Elise and is the start of our bold five year strategic business plan, which includes the introduction of three new cars and advanced new technologies to many more markets around the world," says Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc. "The Evora also represents Lotus core values of performance through light weight and efficiency, proving you can have performance, fuel economy, elegant design and practicality all in a class leading mid-engine 2+2 sports car, whilst also meeting all global safety and homologation standards"

Power comes from a Toyota 3.5-litre V6 (with Toyota's VVT-i variable valve timing system) producing 276 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Lotus developed its own engine management system to optimize unique outputs. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual (also from Toyota). Pavement grip is entrusted to unique Yokohama LTS performance tires (225/40 ZR18 up front ; 255/35 ZR19 in rear). The combination of a 0.337 coefficient of drag and weight at just over 1300 kg, allows the car to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in under five seconds, with a claimed top speed of 261 km/h.

Because it aims to reach a different type of buyer from the almostracecar like Elise and Exige models, Evora features a more refined cabin with elegant trim and extensive equipment list with contemporary features such as touch screen multimedia centre, extensive connectivity for mobile phones and portable audio devices, and power mirrors.

Access to the interior is also reportedly easier than with the smaller sports cars, with wider, taller door openings, narrower sills and a higher seating position that will reportedly accommodate two 99 percentile males (six foot five).

Future derivatives of the car are planned including, among others, a convertible model. Just 2,000 Evoras are planned for annual production on a dedicated assembly line in Hethel, England.

Electric Gullwing: Mercedes Previews a Shockingly Awesome Sports Car

Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing Electric Drive : Mercedes-Benz and its high-performance specialist division AMG offered a first look at a prototype all-electric sports car, the SLS AMG "electric drive" is powered by four in-wheel electric motors providing 526 horsepower and maximum torque of 649 lb-ft. A liquid-cooled 48 kWh, 400-volt lithium-ion battery provides the juice. Mercedes-Benz

After a week of rumor-mill musings online, Mercedes-Benz and its high-performance specialist division AMG offered a first look at a prototype all-electric sports car. And by "first look" we mean "better use your imagination." The company released some details on a version of its upcoming SLS AMG roadster with an electric drive system. Propelling the concept car are four in-wheel electric motors providing 526 horsepower and a maximum torque of 649 lb-ft. That means, when the SLS AMG electric hits the streets -- rumored to happen in 2015 -- it'll likely be quite a performer.

Why the in-wheel motors instead of wheel-hub electric motors, as in some prototypes? Mercedes says it's all about reducing unsprung mass. The company says it's also engineered the car to have the same low center of gravity and balanced weight distribution as the gasoline-powered model. Also, a software-controlled all-wheel-drive system, dubbed AMG eDrive, micromanages torque delivery down to the individual wheel. The first prototype will get a liquid-cooled 48 kWh, 400-volt lithium-ion battery that can be charged by a plug-in system as well as regenerative braking. More details to be announced.

Aside from the technology play, the announcement is also likely calculated to attract attention to the company's gorgeous new SLS AMG sports car, set for a debut later this year. Not that the SLS needs gimmickry to win it coverage: Photos of the upcoming, high-end homage to the classic 300SL "gullwing" Mercedes of the 1950s leaked to German car magazine AutoBild earlier this week. Autobild says the SLS will get a 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 571 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, able to launch it from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.8 seconds, and up to a top speed of 196 mph. More details will likely be revealed when the SLS AMG is unveiled later this year.

2010 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

Redesigned 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Scooped Again

For the second time this month, the facelifted 2010MY versions of the Land Cruiser V8's more compact 3-door and 5-door siblings which are known in many markets as the Land Cruiser Prado (not sold in the States) have been photographed undisguised. These latest pictures, which made it into an Arabic site, confirm that the 2010 Land Cruiser Prado gets a redesigned front fascia inspired by Toyota's latest European models like the Avensis along with more heavily profiled wheel arches and new tail lamps.

Not much else in known about the 2010 Land Cruiser but we suspect that Toyota may also have refreshed the luxury off-roader's interior. In most markets, the current generation Land Cruiser Prado is available with a choice of two powertrains, a 4.0-liter V6 petrol engine producing 249 horsepower and a 3.0-liter four-banger turbo diesel that cranks out 173 horsepower.
